How To Pick Office Trousers
Finding figure-flattering trousers can be the difference between looking like a well-tailored businesswoman and looking like you're wearing your partner's suit. Fashion stylist Jess Zaino breaks down this wardrobe basic and tells you her stylist secret: where to find perfect trousers for under $75.
Step 1:
Trouser Basics
Finding figure-flattering trousers can be the difference between looking like a well-tailored businesswoman and looking like you're wearing your partner's suit. Choose a pair of trousers with a flat front; pleats are a definite "fashion don't". Trousers with a flat panel waistband are especially flattering. A touch of Lycra and polyester in your wool trousers creates a sleek, and surprisingly forgiving, silhouette.
Step 2:
Trouser Fit
Your trousers should hit just below your belly button, gently hug your curves, and have a wide or flared leg. Take your trousers to a professional tailor to make sure they fit your body right. Hem your trousers to 1/4 to 1/2 inch off the ground.
Step 3:
Trouser Colors
Everyone needs a pair of basic black trousers. Trousers with vertical pinstripes elongate and slim the body. Spice up your work wardrobe with gray slacks or camel tweed trousers.
Step 4:
Trouser Dressing
Pair your trousers with a button-down shirt, v-neck cashmere sweater, or slim-fitting turtleneck for the office. These pants can be worn with heels or flats. After work, trade a button-down shirt for a silk halter and you're ready for a night on the town.
