How To Pick Jeans

Wearing jeans is not as simple as it once was. There are so many options to choose from - premium denim, casual denim, light rinse, dark rinse, distressed. Learn which jeans work for which occasion and how to dress like a denim diva with tips from celebrity stylist Jess Zaino.

Step 1:
Tips for Light Washed Denim
Light-washed denim can be cute with a t-shirt and sneakers. Please note by light-wash we do not mean, acid-washed, bleached out, or any jean that resembles "mom jeans". Look for a light-washed jean in a bootcut fit with a low to medium rise. These jeans tend to be thinner, so they're soft on your skin, and quickly achieve that worn-in look. Light-washed jeans are definitely casual. They're perfect for the weekend or a college campus. But not appropriate for the office, dinner out, or a party.
Step 2:
Finding The Perfect Jean
The dark wash jean covers a multitude of sins. The color alone will slim any woman's figure. Find the right cut for your body. When shopping for dark, premium denim, take your time, try on at least six pairs. Pay close attention to how the pockets fit your backside; stitching can make a big difference. Once you've found the perfect jean, head for the tailor. Unless you're a 5'10 fashion model, it's likely you'll need them hemmed.
Step 3:
Dressing Your Dark Denim
You can pair a dark rinse denim with just about anything. Throw on a white button down with a v-neck sweater and a pair of ballet flats or dress it up with a silky top and some sexy heels. These jeans can take you just about anywhere you want to go.
